By most accounts, business has been brisk during the 2010 edition of Art Basel Miami Beach, with dealers at the major fairs seeing strong sales (see reports by our own hard-working reporters Sarah Douglas and Judd Tully), despite what some have called a "leisurely" atmosphere. How to celebrate this "return of the market"? Below, find ARTINFO's selection of events people will want to go to today:
THE EVENTS
Art Fund Expo
W Hotel in South Beach, 2201 Collins Avenue, Miami Beach
10 a.m.-8 p.m.
San Francisco-based Arts Fund is teaming up with White Walls Gallery for a "Never Say Never" expo open to the public all weekend long — albeit with shorter hours on Sunday (10 a.m. – 5 a.m.) — that will proudly display works by street artists, including Blek le Rat, Above, and EINE, outside on the lawn of the W Hotel.
The Art of the Book
Aqua Hotel, 1530 Collins Ave, Miami Beach
11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
The book as a work of art is the subject of Donna Seager's mid-morning talk. Seager's eponymous San Francisco gallery exhibits ceramics, jewelry, and sculpture, in addition to some really cool handmade artist books.
The Island
Flagler Memorial Island, Miami
4 p.m.-8 p.m.
The non-profit public art initiative known as LAND (aka Los Angeles Nomadic Division) has put together a get-away style exhibition that will ferry those Art Basel attendees who have RSVPed from an undisclosed location to Flager Memorial Island to see a clandestine show of works by artists including Bozidar Brazda, Scott Campbell, Brody Condon, Naomi Fisher, and Terrence Koh.
Hans Ulrich Obrist and Julie Peyton-Jones Talk
The Webster, 1220 Collins Avenue, Miami Beach
4:30 p.m.-6 p.m
Co-director of Art Basel Marc Spiegler will moderate a talk with Serpentine Gallery's Hans Ulrich Obrist and Julia Peyton-Jones in none other than The Webster, a three-level clothing boutique that sports much neon signage on its façade.
Pringle of Scotland & Serpentine Gallery 195 Collaborations Exhibition with Tilda Swinton
The Webster, 1220 Collins Avenue, Miami Beach
4:30 p.m.
The Webster will also host a collaboration between London's Serpentine Gallery and Scottish actress, Tilda Swinton — who ARTINFO remembers best for her Academy Award-winning performance in "Michael Clayton" — alongside the clothing brand Pringle of Scotland that sponsors them. Swinton has worked with both parties in the past: Back in 1995 Pringle sponsored Swinton to sleep in a glass case for a week in the Serpentine gallery space.
Adobe Museum of Digital Media Panel
Art Basel Miami Beach, Miami Beach Convention Center, 1901 Convention Center Drive, Miami Beach
5 p.m.-5:30 p.m.
The Adobe Museum of Digital Media — the self-proclaimed first-ever Internet museum — will host a conversation with the museum's curator Tom Eccles and artist Mariko Mori, who will "install" her "Primal Rhythm" project in the online space in 2011. The talk will be held in the "Art Salon" (or auditorium) and is located next to Entrance D of the Convention Center.
Marco Brambilla's "Evolution"
Standard Spa, 40 Island Avenue, Miami Beach
6:30 p.m.-9 p.m.
Video-collage artist Marco Brambilla — who is suddenly hot after being tapped by Kanye West to direct a lavish clip for his song "Power" — will show his newest film, a 3D cinematic history of human conflict.
"Seduce Me" Party in Honor of Isabella Rossellini
The Wolfsonian, 1001 Washington Avenue, Miami Beach
8 p.m.-11 p.m.
Revel in honor of the actress-artist whose series of short videos — either titled "Seduce Me" or "Green Porno" or perhaps, both — explore the seduction rituals of creatures ranging from bedbugs to cuttlefish. As long as there won't be any bedbugs in attendance…
ArtNexus Annual Art Basel Party
ONE Bal Harbour Resort & Spa, 10295 Collins Avenue, Bal Harbour
9 p.m.-2 a.m.
ArtNexus magazine hosts their annual rabble-rousing Art Basel celebration with plenty of Grey Goose to boot!
Visionaire 59 Launch
Grove at W, 2201 Collins
Visionaire's parties are the stuff of myth, and this year the magazine ups the mythical ante by launching arty fairytale books by the likes of John Baldessari, Bjork, Kirsten Dunst and James Franco. Don't miss out on music by fashion music maestro Sebastien Perrin and cocktails inspired by artist Pierre Huyghe's contribution to the series.
