Jan Egeland's "Ten Lessons
from Ten Peace Processes"
Istituto Veneto di Scienze, Lettere ed Arti, Campo Santo
Stefano, San Marco, 2842
11 am
Learn "ten hard-won lessons" from mediator, diplomat, and
activist Jan Egeland, who was involved in both the Oslo Accords in 1993 and
the Guetemala Peace Accords in 1996. Egeland will propose that despite context,
certain applicable lessons have arisen from every peace effort. All he is
saying is give peace a chance. This lecture is part
of the Norwegian pavilion's "State of Things" lecture series.
Gladstone Gallery Hosts Drinks
for Allora & Calzadilla
Terrazza Danielli, Castello, 4196
1 pm
One of the more peculiar features of the Venice Biennale's preview week is the stream of special soirees hosted by commercial galleries, touting their artists's Biennale participation and looking to leverage it. And no honor is more leveragable than being the U.S's official selection, so it's no
surprise that Allora & Calzadilla's New York gallery, Gladstone, is hosting drinks for the multimedia duo for a select crowd of art-world insiders.

Opening of "Glasstress"
Istituto Veneto di Scienze, Lettere ed Arti, Campo Santo
Stefano, San Marco, 2842
6 pm-8 pm
This so-called Glass Biennale calls upon major contemporary artists, including Vik
Muniz and Doug and Mike Starn, to create sculptures and installations made
completely of glass. By also including objects made by designers, the exhibit
aims to shatter our understanding of modernism and the avant-garde notion of
"art for art's sake." "Glasstress" opens to the general public on June 4.

"IllumiNATIONS"
Giardini & Arsenale
Preview: June 1-3, 10 am-6 pm
The center of the action for many of the art lovers assembled for the
preview weekend, the Bice Curiger-curated "IllumiNATIONS" brings
together some 82 international artists, spread out across the Arsenale's
long and sweeping spaces and the International Pavilion in the
Giardini. Curiger promises a grand statement about the enduring power of
the Enlightenment grounded in the works of Venetian master Tintoretto,
and the successes and failures of her show will be the week's central
narrative.
