Any party thrown by Russian contemporary art doyenne Dasha Zhukova is bound to be a blast, so when Zhukova, one of the best-connected ladies in the art world, teams up with her megawatt friends to host a bash, one can assume a night to remember is in store. Thursday evening, on the terrace of Venice's Bauer Hotel, that's just what happened, with Zhukova joining forces with British curator Alexander Dellal and culture commentator Neville Wakefield to fête "Commercial Break," a show of video art by a slew of the hippest contemporary talents — from Dan Colen to Liz Magic Laser and beyond — curated by Wakefield and launched yesterday at the Biennale, where you can view it via the new iPad magazine, Post.
The only problem? Well not everyone could squeeze their way into the star-studded event, where artists like Richard Phillips, Todd Eberle, Marina Abramovic, Mike and Doug Starn, Josephine Meckseper, and Ryan McNamara mingled with Sharjah Art Foundation founder Sheika Hoor Al-Qasimi, who rubbed elbows with Maroon Five rocker Adam Levine who probably locked eyes with R.E.M. crooner Michael Stipe. Apparently, no-bullshit bouncers were kept busy late into the night, turning away swarms of millionaires and models and royals and bigwigs — along with a few normal people.
