For some years now, music legend Bob Dylan has been dabbling in the artworld, even releasing a book published by Random House in 1994 called "DrawnBlank." To celebrate the iconic singer/songwriter's 70th birthday, which tookplace May 24, Washington Green Fine Art Publishing unveiled "the Drawn BlankSeries 2011" across selected art galleries on July 23. The exhibition willfeature eight new previously unpublished limited-edition graphics by the artist.
Dylan created theartworks from 1989 to 1992 while on tour to "relax and refocus a restlessmind." The pieces loosely draw inspiration from the style of the post-Impressionists,even using a bowl of fruit as one of his subjects, just as Paul Cezanne did.Dylan captures the seemingly mundane of aspects of everyday life, like asidewalk café or big rig truck, injecting his own touch.
"His paintings areas idiosyncratic as his music but also somehow recognizably Dylanesque. Thereis a childlike simplicity about them, a haunted and haunting folk qualityapparent in their muted colors and subtle shadings," said June Skinner Sawyers, author of "Bob Dylan: New York,"of his work. "The subject matter is just as plainspoken a bearded man on abridge, his coat flapping in the wind; a motel pool on a sunny day devoid ofall human activity - but there is also a hint of melancholy here, a touch ofmystery rippling beneath the placid surface."
Starting at about$2,446.20, fans can take home a Dylan print. Those interested in owning alleight images can opt for box set that also includes a monograph.
