WHERE: Guild Hall, 158 Main Street, East Hampton, New York
WHEN: August 13-October 17, 2011
WHY THIS SHOW MATTERS:Undeterred by his recent copyright woes, superstar appropriation artistRichard Prince returns to form with a new body of work. He's taken on Willem de Kooning in the past with works merging the modernist master's works with pornography, and now he is taking on that Abstract Expressionist's great rival Jackson Pollock. "Covering Pollock" concentrates on a series of photos depicting Pollock at work — often at his East Hampton studio, located just down the road from Guild Hall — each of which Prince has defaced with found porn and/or punk imagery. Since Pollock is maybe the emblematic figure of high modernism and Prince one of the central figures of postmodernism, the show promises fireworks.
