More than 160 international galleries will participate in the first edition of Frieze Art Fair's US venture, which is to take place in Randall's Island Park, Manhattan, from May 4th through 7th, 2012.
New York dealers have shown their support: thirty-two local galleries, including James Cohan, Elizabeth Dee, David Zwirner and 303 will be present — although some key galleries such as Pace, Gagosian and Barbara Gladstone are conspicuous by their absence. Unsurprisingly, there will be also a strong London contingent: Sadie Coles, Stephen Friedman, Frith Street, Victoria Miro, and Maureen Paley are all crossing the pond.
In her most recent interview with ARTINFO UK, Frieze co-director Amanda Sharp said how important it was for the fair to diversify in terms of gallery provenance. The first Frieze New York will host galleries from 28 countries, including Brazil, China, India, Korea, Mexico, Romania, and Israel. South Africa will be represented for the first time with the Cape Town Gallery Stevensen. Two Beijing galleries, Boers-Li and Tang Contemporary Art, have joined the fair for the first time.
As in London, Frieze New York will have a Frame section dedicated to solo presentations. Rodrigo Moura and Cecilia Alemani — who is also in charge of Frieze Talks and Projects in New York — have advised on Frame's gallery selection.
Frieze New York will inaugurate a new section, Focus, for galleries opened in or after 2001.
"The number and quality of applications to our first American fair matched our ambition in ensuring this was a leading international fair from the beginning" commented co-directors Amanda Sharp and Matthew Slotover.
2012 is a busy year for Frieze. Besides their attempt to take over the Armory's territory, Frieze Art Fair will celebrate its 10th anniversary in London, launching a parallel fair Frieze Masters, dedicated to "pre-21st century art."
