Words on Walls

Published: July 21, 2005
PITTSBURGH—At 9 o'clock last night, an enormous light installation by Jenny Holzer began displaying the words of Pittsburgh writers. First to crawl the walls of the Lawrence Convention Center is Annie Dillard's memoir "An American Childhood."

Holzer's For Pittsburgh "uses more than 1,500 light-emitting diode tubes to scroll the texts 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, in letters 36 inches high and 11 inches wide, along two edges of the roof, each nearly 350 feet long," writes the New York Times.

More books will be added with time including the "Homeward Trilogy" by John Edgar Wideman and "Out of This Furnace" by Thomas Bell.
