Armory Show Releases "Very Curated" 2012 Exhibitor List
‘Tis the season to announce art fair gallery lists. The Armory Show, New York’s most established art fair, released its highly anticipated roster today. The list was subject to much speculation in recent weeks not only because it was released later than usual but also because of New York’s rapidly changing art fair landscape, which is growing more rivalrous by the day. To keep up with the competition, the Armory Show has pared down its list by 25 percent, added a new solo projects section for young dealers, and tried to lure back a few big names had that defected in recent years.
So, how did they do? The fair boasts a few exciting 'gets.' Gallery Hyundai, from Korea, will return to the fair for the first time since 2004 with a presentation by Lee Ufan and Ai Weiwei. Munich's Galerie Thomas, New York's Michael Rosenfeld Gallery, and Düsseldorf's Galerie Ludorff will anchor the modern section. London’s Sprueth Magers will return for the first time in a decade, and New York’s Greene Naftali and David Zwirner have also come back into the fold. (Many New York galleries, including Naftali and Zwirner, are doing multiple hometown fairs in addition to maintaining a presence on the international fair circuit. A rep from David Zwirner estimated the gallery does a fair about once every two weeks.)
A handful of big names, many of which will show with the debut edition of Frieze New York, are not returning to the piers. A number of these are European galleries, including Yvon Lambert, Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac, Simon Lee Gallery, and White Cube. Bartolami and Murray Guy opted for one hometown March fair, eschewing the Armory to show at the scrappier Independent. While alliances continue to shift, however, a few familiar local names — CANADA and Rachel Uffner Gallery among them — remain unattached to any fair, meaning that they will probably anchor NADA’s debut New York fair in May, which reportedly plans to host approximately 50 galleries.
What can visitors expect from this new and improved Armory Show? “Art fairs have a tendency to go bigger and bigger, but our new mission is to make it more boutique, and give the galleries a larger footprint,” Armory managing director Noah Horowitz told ARTINFO. He noted that both Pier 92, devoted to modern art, and Pier 94, devoted to contemporary, received an architectural makeover from design firm Bade Stageberg Cox. The aisles will be wider, the VIP lounge will be twice the size, and a new farm-to-table restaurant aims to give the fair a more organic feel. A new media lounge, presented in partnership with the Moving Image video fair, will serve as a venue for screenings and panel discussions. Most booths will focus on presentations of fewer than four artists. “They won’t be trying to squeeze their entire program into the booth. These will be very curated,” Horowitz said.
