– Mike Kelley Memorial Pops Up in L.A.: An unofficial grassroots monument to the Detroit-born artist, who died last week at age 57, sprang up in an abandoned driveway blocks from Kelley's home in Highland Park. Paying homage to "More Love Hours" and "Wages of Sin," two installations Kelley exhibited at the 1989 Whitney Biennial, the memorial is a spontaneous expression of fans, and "doesn't feel like it's for the artists who were Kelley's peers or mentors as much as for those who came to L.A.'s art scene because he was a part of it." [L.A. Weekly]

– Miami Walmart Will Force Art Fairs Out: Now that plans for a proposed mega-Walmart store in midtown Miami are moving forward, Art Basel Miami Beach satellite fairs Scope, Red Dot, and Art Asia will have to start searching for a new space to hold their annual events. [Miami Herald]

– Performance Artist Outrages Scots: Performer and filmmaker Sam Firth is ruffling some feathers with her state-funded project, which involves filming herself every day for a year standing in the same spot for 10 minutes. "We all know artists can say anything is of value that they believe can be called art," said a representative from Taxpayer Scotland. "But we really do have to ask, 'Why is the state allowed to fund these things?'" [Telegraph]

– Zaha Hadid to Build Iraqi Bank HQ: The Iraqi-born starchitect and the governor of the Central Bank of Iraq signed the agreement during a ceremony at the Victoria & Albert Museum last week. Hadid's practice will start working immediately on the design for the headquarters, which will be built on the shores of the Tigris River. [Press Release]

– David Hockney Works on Paper Go to Auction: On February 17, almost 150 works on paper by the British artist, including several works from his time in America, will go up for sale at Christie's in London. The auction has a total presale estimate of £1 million ($1.57 million). [Guardian]

– Occupy Nigeria Gets Arty: The Center for Contemporary Art Lagos has launched a program of events and exhibitions related to the Occupy Nigeria movement. In the exhibition "Owambe, Aso-Ebi and the Politics of Dress," London-based Nigerian photographer Jide Alakija presents a series of photographs taken at traditional Nigerian weddings. – Guerlains Give 1,000 Drawings to Pompidou Center: Daniel Guerlain, heir of the legendary parfume-maker Jacques Guerlain, and his wife Florence have donated 1,000 contemporary drawings to the Pompidou Center. The gift will only officially become part of the collection after their death. The couple are staunch supporters of contemporary drawing: they created the Guerlain Foundation in 1996 and are also behind the Guerlain Prize for contemporary drawing. [La Croix]

– Meet the Met's Florist: The WSJ profiles Remco van Vilet, the 38-year-old in-house floral designer for the Met Museum, who personally designs five huge arrangements in the Met's Great Hall every week. His arrangements sometimes reach 20 feet, making them among the tallest in the city. But he cares about the art, too: before planning presentations for a gala, Vilet makes sure to tour the collection being feted with a curator. [WSJ]

– Details of India's First Biennial Announced: The Kochi Muziris Biennale 2012 will open on December 12, 2012, in Kochi, in the South Western state of Kerala. The first event of this scale in the sub-continent, it will feature more than 80 artists including Alfredo Jaar, Bani Abidi, Fiona Tan, Subodh Gupta, and Wangechi Mutu. [Press Release]

– Shinique Smith to James Cohan Gallery: The artist, who is best known for her assemblages that incorporate textiles and nostalgic mementos, will now show with James Cohan Gallery. She was previously represented in New York by Yvon Lambert, which shuttered its Chelsea location last year. [Press Release]

– Arts Donors Among America's Top 50 Philanthropists: The most generous members of the 1 percent devoted more than 2 percent of their charitable giving last year to arts and culture, according to the Chronicle of Philanthropy, which issued its annual ranking of America's 50 most generous donors. The 12 arts donors on the list include Jorge Perez, who snagged naming rights for his $30 million donation to the Miami Art Museum, and Eli Broad. [LAT]
