Fashion week has officially descended on New York, and with hundreds of shows and presentations occurring over a nine-day period, figuring out which ones to watch out for can be an overwhelming task. There are the obvious ones, like Marc Jacobs, Oscar de la Renta, Ralph Lauren, and Calvin Klein. But there are also fresher labels to look out for. Here are five such shows that you must check out.
Correll Correll
Are twin sisters Daphne and Vera Correll the new Rodarte? Equipped with art degrees (Daphne studied at Cooper Union; Vera went to school at the Art Institute of Chicago), the 2012 Ecco Domani Fashion Foundation award-winners are poised to make a splash at their first New York Fashion Week presentation with their weaving and dying techniques.
Moncler
This über-luxe Franco-Italian outerwear label always creates a spectacle during fashion week. In 2010 100 models showed off their designs on scaffolding at the Chelsea Piers Golf Club. Last year, the brand had a flash mob at Grand Central Station. This year’s show at Central Park’s Wollman Rink (models on ice?) is guaranteed to impress.
Sophie Theallet
This media-shy French designer should be in the spotlight more. Theallet creates impeccable designs that are a perfect balance of elegance and sophistication with just the right touch of fashion forwardness. Michelle Obama is a fan.
Proenza Schouler
After last season’s Googie architecture-inspired designs, we can’t wait to see what Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez are going to come out with for fall/winter 2012.
Rodarte
With countless seasons of art-inspired, fit-for-a-museum creations, Kate and Laura Mulleavy are sure to present an innovative, well thought-out collection yet again.
