Roslyn Oxley9 Gallery
Del Kathryn Barton 'but passion has made his face like pale ivory'
by Nicholas Forrest
Published: February 23, 2012

Roslyn Oxley9 Gallery was one of two Australian galleries that took part in the VIP online art fair. Exhibiting a wide range of artists working in a variety of media, Roslyn Oxley9 made the most of the opportunity to showcase the artists they represent.

According to the gallery, most of the works sold by Roslyn Oxley9 were by Australian artists to new clients in the USA, Singapore, Indonesia and Australia with the most popular artists being Del Kathryn Barton, Louise Hearman and Glenn Sorenson.

A gallery representative commented that “We have sold to new clients in New York, Singapore, Indonesia and Australia. Most of the solid inquiry - continuing - is coming from New York.  But definitely also from Asia for us. The Australian interest is to be expected. That's the heartland of our market, of course. And Australian collectors are very interested in the major international art fairs. VIP included.”

Although the gallery declined to comment on individual sales, the popularity of figurative works was identified by the gallery as one of the most notable trends of the fair which would coincide with the works listed as “No longer available” in the gallery’s VIP fair private rooms.

A total of three vibrant figurative paintings by renowned Australian artist Del Kathryn Barton, priced in the $25,000 - $50,000 range, were listed as no longer available. The 2008 Winner of the Archibald Prize for Portraiture awarded by the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Barton has cemented her position as one of Australia’s most desirable artists.

Also appearing to have been sold was a painting priced in $10,000 - $25,000 range by Louise Hearman, one of Australia's most prominent contemporary painters.  Characterised by strange juxtapositions, eerie light, and a strong emotional resonance, Hearman’s paintings usually contain children or animals whom the artists has referred to as her ‘secret people’

Overall, the gallery was pleased with their experience with VIP, although would like to have seen a chat interface more conducive to a business environment and more real-time information about who was browsing their booth.

Roslyn Oxley9 gallery will participate in ART Cologne from 18 – 22 April and Art HK from 17 – 20 May.  The gallery’s website can be viewed here
